Why we built a diamond painting pattern editor (and made it free)
Order a custom diamond painting chart anywhere and you get a preview first. Looks great. Then the PDF arrives and the sky is a different blue, half the browns merged, and the face you cared about lost its shape. The preview was a stylized picture; the chart was generated later, by different code. You paid for a surprise.
That gap is the whole reason the Pattern Studio exists. The editor does not show you an impression of your pattern - it shows you the pattern. The same matching that builds the paid PDF runs live in your browser: every cell gets the closest of 454 real DMC colors, and what you see is cell for cell what prints.

What happens when you upload a photo
Pick a width between 20 and 60 cm and a drill shape - square 2.5 mm (4 drills per cm) or round 2.8 mm (3.57 per cm). Your photo is resampled to that grid, so a 30 cm wide pattern is 120 cells across. Each cell then gets the nearest DMC color by measuring the color distance to all 454 entries in the chart. That happens on your device, in about a second. Your photo goes nowhere until you actually order.
Then comes the part no preview tool gives you: the pattern is yours to edit. A slider sets how many colors the final chart uses, from 10 to 60. Fewer colors means fewer bags of drills and a calmer pattern; more colors means more detail. You see the trade-off live instead of guessing.
Why editing colors by hand matters
Automatic matching is honest but literal. A portrait often ends up with two browns so close you cannot tell them apart on the canvas - merging them into one saves a full bag of drills and nobody sees the difference. Skin tones are the opposite case: sometimes the closest match reads too grey, and swapping it for a warmer DMC color makes the whole face work. In the Studio you tap the color in the legend, pick a replacement from the full chart, and the pattern updates instantly. Undo takes you one step back if it gets worse.
Every swap carries over to the printed chart exactly, because the PDF is generated from your edited pattern - not re-derived from the photo. Cover page, symbol grid pages and a DMC legend with drill counts per color, ready to print on A4.
What it costs
Using the editor is free, with no account. Upload as many photos as you want, edit as long as you want. You pay €8.95 once, only when you download the printable PDF of a pattern. That is the whole model.
