How to use the preview tool
Four steps, no account, and you see the result before you decide anything. This page explains what each choice changes, so you are not guessing.
1. Choose your photo
A JPG or PNG from your phone is fine. What matters is not resolution but light: a photo lit from one side keeps its shape, a flash photo turns flat.
2. Choose a width
The width decides how many drills fit, and with that how much detail survives. A face needs more width than a landscape.
3. Choose a drill type
Square drills sit tight against each other and give a sharper image. Round drills are easier to place and more forgiving for a first painting.
4. Compare the sizes
You get the preview next to several sizes, so you can see where the detail starts to disappear. Not happy? Change one setting and run it again — it is free.
Getting a better result
- Crop in close. The tighter the crop, the more drills are spent on what you care about.
- One subject, quiet background. A busy background eats detail the face needed.
- Keep the orientation: a landscape photo on a landscape canvas, a portrait on a portrait canvas.
- For a face, go one size bigger than feels necessary. Eyes need small detail, and small detail needs drills.
Questions we get
I am between two sizes. Which one?
The bigger one, nearly always. More drills means more detail, and the finished piece reads better from a distance.
Should I use auto-crop?
Leave it off if you want to keep the whole photo. Turn it on if the subject is small in the frame and you want it to fill the canvas.
Why does my photo look grainy in the preview?
The preview shows your photo as individual drills, which is what you will actually place. Grain there means the size is too small for the detail in the photo — go wider.
Is it really free?
Generating and looking is free, without an account and without a limit on tries. You only pay if you order the kit or the printable pattern.
